Your baby’s birth must be registered within 21 days either in the district where the baby was born, or the district where the mother lives. Find the address in a telephone directory – look under ‘Registry of Births, Marriages, and Deaths.
Who Can Register Baby’s Birth?
Either the mother or the father if the parents are married. If not, the father must attend with the mother and both should jointly sign the papers. If the father cannot attend, he must sign a form available from the Registrar before the birth is formally registered. If both parents are unable to attend, one of the following can register the birth:
- A relative of the mother, or the father’s relative if the parents are married
- Anybody present at the birth
- Anyone living in the premises where the birth occurred
- Anyone who has a legal charge over the baby.
What do I Need To Take With Me?
- The hospital will give you a card which should be handed to the Registrar.
- If the parents are married, take your Marriage Certificate.
Check the spelling of baby’s name, you can’t correct any errors after the Certificate has been signed!
